Excessive Sweating is not normal…
I always change my sweaty pajamas at night. No, it was not even a hot summer night and I didn’t even dressed warm clothes. As a doctor i suspected that this would not be ok. But I closed my eyes for the problem. But when the night sweat was accompanied by an overall weakness. And I felt a wider nodule on my neck. I knew she was sick and I had to go to the doctor.
It is a normal function that helps to control our body temperature. And it also helps to release salt-based fluid from your body which plays a most important role of our body.
Sweating changes our body temperature, the outside temperature, and inside temperature. The most common areas of sweating on our body is armpits, face, palms of the hands, soles of the feet etc. Sweating in normal amounts is an common thing.
Not sweating enough and sweating too much can both cause problems. The absence of sweat can be dangerous because your risk of overheating increases. Excessive sweating may be more psychologically damaging than physically damaging.
So its seem to be ok but there are some conditions and situations for sweating sometimes its serious problem.
When is Excessive sweating normal and when not?
We all sweat.
Sweating in hot weather or during training is quite normal.
But to set the limit when sweating is still normal and what is “beyond the line” is not as easy as it may seem
Why are we sweating?
Sweating is a natural and, moreover, a very effective mechanism to prevent the body from overheating. The evaporation of the sweat droplets cools the body. An adult normally sweats about 1.5 liters of sweat. The human body, however,it has an amazing ability to adapt and is able to sweat 20 times more in extreme heat. For example, during the Bedwater Ultramarathon in Death Valley, runners sweat 3-4 liters of sweat per hour in extremely hot weather:
Sweat contains 99% water and 1% minerals, especially salt, so it is salty. Interestingly, the sweat usually does not smell immediately after sweating. It will only start to smell when bacteria that are commonly found on the skin and start to metabolize it.
About 1% of people suffer from genetically caused excessive sweating, hyperhidrosis. This “hyper-sweating” may occur in childhood or adolescence and is usually of unknown cause. People with hyperhidrosis also sweat 5 times more sweat. They do not sweat all over the body, but usually only in some places, eg. in the armpits, palms, feet and forehead. These people are sweating even when they are quiet in an air-conditioned room, like watching TV. Even some with extreme sweating can drink in the pool water: O
How is hyperhidrosis manifested?
damp palms – one has to wipe the palm of his hands before shaking hands – socks and shoes are soaked all day long with dark wet spots under the arms – sweating is visible on the clothes, it requires changing clothes several times a day
This type of sweating is certainly very unpleasant, but on the other hand, there is no serious illness. I know that I did not calm down those affected individuals because their excessive sweating is annoying not only for them but also for their surroundings, causing them psychological and emotional trauma and decreasing their quality of life, but the fact is that they do not die of hyperhidrosis.
Excessive sweating can also cause strong emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety, or stress. It is proven that men and people with extra pounds sweat more.
Do you have arachnophobia? panicked fear of spiders? Then you can only drink if you imagine a spider approaching you.
Some medicines (some antidepressants, antipsychotics), caffeine, alcohol and also drugs (cocaine, amphetamine) may cause increased sweating. In dependence on benzodiazepines, alcohol or drugs, excessive sweating is often a part of withdrawal syndrome.
As a result of hormonal changes, menopausal women will also enjoy excessive sweating associated with hot flashes.
Causes Of Excessive Sweating
Sweating is normal and occurs regularly in your daily living. However, a variety of causes can stimulate increased sweating.
Inner body temp or environmental temperatures also can be the cause of sweating.
Here are some conditions can also make you break out in a heavy sweat
- emotional stress
Sweating can be caused by the foods you eat as well. It can be happen by eating spicy foods, caffeinated drinks, including soda, coffee, and tea, alcoholic beverages
When is sweating a problem?
Sweating is not only a trivial problem.
Excessive sweating may also signal some diseases, for example, fever above 38 ° C is normal for us to consume.
CAUTION, sudden chest pain associated with sweating may be a heart attack.
However, ill sweating may also indicate the following diseases:
increased thyroid activity (hyperthyroidism), tuberculosis (night sweats) HIV / AIDS, infectious diseases hypoglycaemia in diabetesobesity (sweating mainly during daytime and physical activity) lymphoma (night sweats typically) endocarditis coffeeochromocytoma (flushing and sweating) Parkinson’s disease
Night sweating is also a serious signal, when the affected person sweats at night so that they have to change their pajamas.
When to visit a doctor?
So if you are not among those who are sweating excessively from a young age and you notice other symptoms besides sweating, such as:
– overall weakness,
– weight loss
– elevated temperature,
– a cough
– enlarged nodules anywhere on the body
rather, consult your general practitioner who will suggest further examinations to determine the cause. First of all, it is necessary to find out the cause of excessive sweating before the treatment comes.
It wasn’t normal…
So after three sweaty nights I went to the doctor and started a carousel of examinations – blood, urine, swabs, chest X-rays, lymph node ultrasound, chest and abdomen CT, infectological and hematological examination… The cause of my complaints remained unclear.
As a doctor, I knew that combining night sweats and enlarged lymph nodes is the most probable diagnosis of lymph node cancer (lymphoma). I was really crying in my pillow with anxiety on my breasts at the thought that I might die…
There was nothing I could do, eventually I had to undergo surgery where one of the cervical nodes had been selected and sent for a detailed histological examination.
Diagnosis of excessive sweating
The waiting for the diagnosis was the most terrible time. Finally, lymph node histology did not confirm the most serious diagnosis :-)))))) Only one extremely rare but not dangerous disease called Kikuchi disease. If you haven’t heard of it yet, I’m not surprised. Until then, I haven’t heard of her either. This disease affects only one person in a million and most often young Japanese
The best part of this story is that the disease will disappear on its own without any treatment. Uuuf, I breathed. After this experience, he was suddenly more beautiful every day, a sunny day and a blue sky.
I was simply able to enjoy everyday little joys – that my daughter smiled at me or that the flowers in the garden blossomed.
There is nothing better for a doctor than to get sick and to test how the patients feel. I am convinced that this personal experience has helped me to be a better doctor – a more understanding and empathetic…
